Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, MI
Opening December 13, 2012
Works by top tier, internationally celebrated fiber artists explores the fine art textile movement over the past century through the contemporary artwork of four generations of artists. The rich variety of assembled pieces illustrates the transformation of fibers from functional and decorative use to today’s forms created with a wide array of diverse materials and techniques. The artwork addresses issues such as narrative, identity, ecology, recycling, and political thought, and demonstrates beauty and visual richness achieved through color, pattern, texture, and form.

A vibrant world of fabric, color, fiber, creativity and more awaits art enthusiasts this autumn when SUU’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery opens “Everything In Between: Art Quilts, Fabric Collage, and Embroidery.” Featuring renowned international, national and regional artists, this spectacular collection will be on exhibit from September 27 through November 10.
This exhibition will feature numerous associated events, and will kick off a biennial juried art quilt festival in the new Southern Utah Museum of Art, beginning in 2014. Curated by Deborah K. Snider, assistant professor of art education and art quilter, “Everything In Between” features 48 artists from the Masters of the Art Quilt and 500 Art Quilts books (Lark Publications), including several outstanding artists from Snider’s personal quilting network.
The inaugural exhibition this year has evolved into an exciting, collaborative undertaking according to Deborah Snider. “Starting with our initial vision of the quilt exhibit, we have expanded into six weeks of amazing and connected special events,” says Snider. “The incredible network of talent that is building around this project includes the support and energy of students, faculty, staff, and members of our surrounding communities. The entire project is coming together in perfect harmony.”
Contemporary fabric and fiber artists know no limitations: They draw, paint, stamp, tear, print, photo-transfer, stain, rust, discharge, fold, stitch, weave, glue, batik, tie-dye, distress and embellish to make the ordinary extraordinary.
